The circuit court is a court of general jurisdiction and hears criminal, civil, probate, juvenile and small claims matters.

Cases that are appealed from the circuit court go to the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District which is located in Kansas City. If the case is appealed from there, it goes to the Missouri Supreme Court in Jefferson City.

The Circuit Court of Johnson County, Missouri is comprised of 2 circuit court judges and 2 associate circuit court judges. Circuit judges are elected for six year terms, and associate circuit judges are elected for a term of four years. The Circuit Court of Johnson County, Missouri is located in the Johnson County Justice Center at 101 West Market Street in Warrensburg, Missouri. Prior locations include the Johnson County Courthouse at 300 North Holden Street and the Johnson County Historical Courthouse at 302 North Main Street, both of which are in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Historical Courthouse is the site of the famous 1870 Old Drum Trial.
